About the DISC Lab

Housed at the University of Chicago’s Crown School of Social Work, Policy and Practice and closely affiliated with the Kersten Institute for Urban Education, the Development in Sociocultural Context (DISC) Lab explores the role of school, peer, family, and community influences that impact young people’s achievement motivation, engagement, behavioral and academic identities, and overall well-being.

The DISC lab’s holistic approach to development research within young people’s unique sociocultural contexts connects academic success with social, emotional, cultural, and behavioral well-being. Utilizing these insights, we are committed to working in close collaboration with KIUE and other community partners to develop evidence-based interventions that inform policies and practices aimed to reduce risky health behavior and promote positive youth development.
